What rights do you have if you owe medical bills?

If you have medical bills owing, as a debtor you have a right to confirmation of the debt as well as the right to dispute it.  If you have Medicare no health care provider who accepts Medicare is allowed to bill you for any more than what Medicare approves.  Other than this patients have no rights, legal protection, or recourse, with the exception of expensive litigation, with respect to medical bills that have not been paid, even if the bills are wrongly billed or are incorrect.

A single collection account – even for a $10 copay – can ruin a  patient's credit score and cause havoc for any new loan or refinancing.
